Low-set windows are windows set at floor level. They’re not exactly everyone’s first choice when it comes to window style or placement, but they just may be the windows you need for certain rooms. Here are some of our design ideas to get you started.
Add privacy to neighbor-facing walls – Sometimes, you don’t want to be accidentally peeking into your neighbor’s house and vice versa. While a decorative fence, shrubbery, or window treatments can provide privacy, low-set windows can be another no-fuss alternative. In addition to privacy, it provides natural lighting and doesn’t conflict with indoor lights if you wish to add a sense of drama to your dining room, bedroom, or even the bathroom.
Create your own gallery space – If you have a nice collection of art or prints, having low-set windows in conjunction with transom windows will let you use the wall space for your collection without sacrificing the benefits of natural lighting. With Renewal by Andersen® replacement windows, you don’t have to worry about the artwork fading from exposure to sunlight, thanks to our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass options, which can block up to 95% of harmful ultraviolet rays.
Frame a limited view – Not all homes have fantastic views, but a partial view can be carefully framed with the right window. Many homeowners opt for narrow windows or custom-shaped windows, but in some cases, low-set windows may be more effective. You can position a couch facing the low-set windows for optimum viewing position.
No-glare home office – When people talk about a home office, they think about a workspace that includes a desk adjoining eye-level windows. The problem with this arrangement is that it catches a lot of glare during the day, even if the monitor or laptop screen is facing away from the window. A low-set window under the workspace provides sufficient natural lighting, without the glare. As a bonus, you can use the wall space to mount your desktop monitor to ergonomic viewing height and reclaim your desktop space.
